BSS schools offer students the chance to study the International Baccalaureate in Spain
What is the International Baccalaureate?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a world-class educational programme designed to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills that students need to live, learn and work in a globalised world. Founded in 1968, the IB offers four educational programmes that can be implemented in any country or culture:
- Primary Years Programme (PYP): For students aged 3–12.
- Middle Years Programme (MYP): For students aged 11–16.
- Diploma Programme (DP): For students aged 16–19
- Career-related Programme (CP): For students aged 16–19 who are interested in a more vocational education.
Characteristics of the PYP, MYP, DP and CP
The PYP “marks the start of a lifelong journey”. For children aged 3–12, this programme aims to develop caring and culturally aware individuals who are able to actively participate in their own learning.
The MYP for youngsters aged 11–16 builds students’ “confidence in managing their own learning and making connections between their learning in the classroom and the real world”.
The PD is a future-ready programme for individualsaged 16–19 , es unthat “builds students’ inquiring mindset, fosters their desire to learn and prepares them to excel at their careers and lead meaningful lives”.
Specific characteristics of the DP:
- Academic rigour:This academically demanding programme prepares students for university and beyond.
- Broad curriculum:Students must choose subjects from six subject groups and complete the three components of the DP core: the extended essay, theory of knowledge (TOK) and creativity, activity, service (CAS).
- All-round development:The DP encourages critical thinking, inquiry and intercultural learning.
Finally, the CP, also for students aged 16–19, is a unique programme for youngsters in their final school years. It equips them with future-ready skills and prepares them to follow their career pathways, combining academic subjects with their own professional interests.
